Pole dancing classes
Fitness crazes are a lot like fad diets, they come and are en vogue with everyone doing them and then seemingly as quickly as they came on the scene they are gone. Remember the Atkins craze of the 1990s?
Until fairly recently, pole dancing was in the area of adult entertainment only. However, in the past few years pole dancing for fitness has fairly exploded on to the world wide fitness scene. There are now well known pole dancing competitions in which professional and amateur dancers (not strippers) wow the audience with their strength and musicality.
Pole dancing classes offer an incredible workout. By far the best total body work out I have ever tried, and I have tried many classes. But pole dancing is more than a fitness tool for most women and I believe that is why it is proving to have staying power.
Pole dancing classes burn a lot of calories, tone and strengthen the core, arms and legs, improves flexibility, and is the most fun I have ever had working out. Most of the time I forget I am working out until after a while I am out of breath and all sweaty.
Most pole dancing studios are owned, operated, and targeted at women; many do not even allow men in. They offer foster a sense of community between students which is priceless in a time when so many women are so stressed.
I have heard a famous dancer describe pole as her salvation, and that is not a stretch for most of us. Pole time is one of the only times when I can be me, not a mother, not a wife, not an employee. I am me. I can reconnect with myself on a level that I can’t do in any other fitness class.
Many pole studios, while aware of the awesome workout pole dancing provides, choose to focus on the whole woman. One of my favorite mottos of a studio is “Be confident, be sexy, be strong”. By focusing on the whole person and helping women to appreciate their bodies as they are currently, not for what they would like them to look like, a woman is allowed a freedom that is all too rare in our current society.
Since I have been dancing, my body has changed. I am leaner. I am stronger. I stand taller. More importantly, my attitude has changed. I am more confident. I appreciate my body. I will never be model thin but my body can do amazing things, and I am very proud of it.
When speaking to other women who have taken pole dancing classes, almost universally, I have heard that it is an amazing workout that can challenge everyone from the beginner to the very fit. There is always more to learn, there are always new things to try.
Pole dancing for fitness used to be a little secret thing that some edgy women did to stay in shape, however, thankfully, it is becoming more and more mainstream. There are even people who would like to see it be made an Olympic sport.
